Weird Poker Games

Poker in all of its variations is the most popular card game played in the world today and in the majority of cases the traditional hand rankings are used to decide a winner in each game. This makes it much easier for players to start playing a new poker variant, since the fundamentals of making winning hands remain the same. There are simply variations in how many cards you’re dealt and the betting structure of the game can differ slightly but nothing too complex for anyone familiar with traditional poker games.

In order to become a well rounded poker player a player is recommended to become familiar with all poker games online including the weird poker variants that aren’t as popular.

Due to the development of the internet, online poker sites offering poker have popped up and established themselves since the late 90s. It has become a very fascinating and exciting game to play for millions of people all over the world. As a result of the game’s enormous popularity, a broader selection of games have been made available to play by online poker rooms. This is not possible at land-based casinos since some poker variations aren’t popular enough to spread in the casino.

When it comes to playing poker online, there are more players seated at tables across the room, creating more action for the less commonly played variants. Obviously, the online poker room doesn’t have to worry about paying dealers, or the nice man that makes sure to keep the restrooms clean. It is much affordable for an online poker room to spread as many tables/games as they want. That is why all poker fans can find a game for their own taste. This explains the dramatic increase of poker on the internet all over the world.

Nowadays there exist a lot of unique and interesting online poker games, allowing online poker players to mix up the games they play to keep things fresh and fun. If you have been playing online poker for a while it can become a bit of a grind when you’re always playing games like Hold’em, Omaha, and Stud. In addition to those popular popular poker games there are many more exotic poker games available to play. They may not be as popular, but if there are enough players to start a new game, what does it matter.

The list of weird poker games below certainly isn’t exhaustive but it’s a good starting point. You can try your luck out at games such as Three Card Poker, Five Card Omaha, and Irish Poker. These are just a few of the games you can play online that will mix it up from the norm.

Five Card Omaha

Another weird poker variation is Five Card Omaha. Unfortunately besides a few of the top online poker rooms it is not played almost in all online poker sites. This game is a variation of the popular four card Omaha but players are each dealt five cards and not four. This creates even more card combinations to form a five-card poker hand so hands like straights and flushes are common types of hands.

Three Card Poker

In 1990 there was a new poker variation invented in England, called Three Card Poker. This poker game gained the popularity rapidly especially when the game began being spread in online poker rooms. The objective of Three Card Poker is to get a hand that is better than the dealer’s hand. You are dealt three cards face up and one of the most common strategies is to play any hand that is Queen high or better. If you fold, you will forfeit your ante bet which is placed before the game starts, and another game beings.

Irish Poker

This game is a variation of Texas Hold’em but instead of each player getting two hole cards like they would be accustomed to in Hold’em they receive four hole cards but discard two of them after the flop. Since each player gets more pocket cards at the beginning of the game, it means their starting hand can potentially hit the flop in a lot of different ways. All players need to do is pick the two cards after the flop is dealt, which have the best chance of winning the pot.

So as you can see from reading this, there are many weird and less known poker games that are definitely worth trying out. A beginner may jump straight into Hold’em as it seems to be the poker game that every poker player and their dog is playing, but since the game has been played for decades, it means there will be many experienced sharks who are looking to make runs against weaker inexperienced players, and therefore most beginners don’t stand much of a chance, killing the enjoyment factor of playing in the first place.
