Las Vegas Sands' Sheldon Adelson breaks ranks with AGA

The often controversial chairman of US land gambling group Las Vegas Sands, Sheldon Adelson, has apparently broken ranks with the other members of the American Gaming Association in opposing efforts to legalise online poker in the United States.

The development was reported in the Las Vegas Sun Tuesday by Jon Ralston, who quoted a reliable source on the issue. He was told that Adelson has voiced his opposition to online gambling nemesis Jon Kyl, and to the AGA, telling them that he was:

*     Morally opposed to online gambling
*     Was not confident in technology to exclude minors and
*     That legalization was an "unnecessary distraction in 2012.

Later Ralston posted on the 2plus2 message board: "AGA boss Fahrenkopf confirms my story on Adelson vis a vis web poker, says [Adelson] visited him December 5 to tell him of opposition. AGA still backs [legalization of online poker].
