New York Pushes for a Third Casino License in 2022
Mobile sports betting has arrived in the State of New York and New York Casino Licenses are now available. However, it seems not everybody is content with the recently activated market. New Yorker's are now pushing for casino gambling options to be incorporated into New York City. Lawmakers and casino unions are eagerly trying to convince people of the permits of commercial gaming in the city that never sleeps. Their goal? To generate revenue through fees, licenses, and betting taxes, coupled with the creation of thousands of new jobs.
Senators Get Onboard with the Plan
New York senators Gary Pretlow and Joe Addabbo have already confirmed that they are very much behind the plan to bring casino gambling to New York City. Indeed, Pretlow is already renowned, currently serving as the New York Assembly Committee on Gaming and Wagering’s chairman. Right now, their issues seem to revolve around licensing. Two licenses have already been granted to casinos in upstate New York. Furthermore a third license is hanging over New York City like a cloud, and the issue needs resolving.
What Do We Know about New York Casino Licenses?
At present, just three licenses are planned, and two of those are already thought to be taken. The MGM Resorts’ Empire City parlor is thought to be one of them, while the other is Genting’s Resorts World. However, both establishments will only be able to offer video lottery games, not bonafide table games and slot machines.
If the senators want to see an extra $750 million added to the state’s coffers annually, they will need to make moves on that third license. To date, the Addabbo is in favor of granting it to Long Island or New York City rather than another New York state-based casino. Las Vegas Sands, Hard Rock International and Wynn Resorts are already reportedly interested in acquiring the license and setting up shop on the island. Manhattan is thought to be ruled out. Senator Addabbo already consider that too much of a tourist destination. He would prefer to elevate a part of New York City that isn’t yet as “touristy”.
A Casino In New York City
According to sources, there are several requests and plans listed for the third license. One is an online site Manhattanslots.net. Michael O’Keefe (a local restaurateur) would create a 24,000 sq. ft restaurant with table games but refuses to offer slots. Michael O’Keefe would want the establishment to be built in Manhattan. Reason being it would appeal to big spenders and high rollers. However, his bid is unlikely to be accepted when so many larger fish (and gambling-related enterprises) are in the market for a spot in New York. For now, it remains to be seen who will acquire the license, but movement is being made to grant it.
