Wednesday October 2,2013 : MYSTERY OVER CHARGES AGAINST CANTOR EXEC
US Department of Justice drops charges, but court documents remain sealed.
Our readers will recall the case of Mike Colbert, a Cantor Gaming exec who made the gambling headlines with 24 other persons last year when they were charged with illegal online sports betting associated with Pinnacle Sports by the US Department of Justice.
Colbert protested his innocence on serious accusations that included allegations of corruption, conspiracy and money laundering, but was nevertheless compelled to leave his job at Cantor.
It now appears that the charges against Colbert were dropped last (September) month, but because the court documents on the case remain sealed, speculation is doing the rounds on why this has occurred.
Was it the result of insufficient evidence, or some sort of collaborative deal with enforcement officials? No-one outside the investigation knows for sure.
What is known is that a parallel Nevada Gaming Control Board enquiry continues.
