Cricket-mad Indian punters have, as predicted by the authorities, been betting large on the World Cup cricket tournament that opened this week on the sub-continent. And the police have been just as active in cracking down on the practice, judging by reports from the Press Trust of India.
 
Three betting syndicates were broken and eight arrests made in raids on premises in central Delhi, according to the New Delhi police, who reported that laptops, mobile phones and television equipment was seized.
 
Betting on any sport except horse racing is illegal in India, and betting on popular sports like cricket is strongly discouraged.
 
Earlier this month, five-year bans were handed out to three cricketers representing neighbouring Pakistan for match-fixing against an England team at the end of last year.
