Suspends services pending an investigation
Bitstamp, a European Bitcoin exchange, has temporarily suspended services saying one of its operational wallets was compromised this past weekend resulting in a loss of around 19 000 BTC (worth around US$5.3 million).
The company’s online advisory requests customers not make any further deposits to issued bitcoin deposit addresses as the investigation into the incident, in conjunction with law enforcement, continues.
Nejc Kodrič, chief executive officer of Bitstamp commenting on the incident via Twitter said: “My sincerest apologies to those who are affected by our service being temporary suspended. Thank you all for your patience. We are working diligently to restore service and hope to have an ETA later today.”
The company assures customers their BTC accounts are secure and their balances safe.
