Mobile Gambling Getting More Popular

Growing numbers of online punters access their pastime on the go.
 
A new study by Kantar Sport GB Syndicated Online Gambling Research has confirmed the ascendency of mobile over desktop gambling devices, revealing that the number of exclusively desktop (PC and laptop) punters in Q2-2013 has declined to just 49 percent this year when compared with the same period last year (Q2-2012: 67 percent).
 
Over half of online gamblers are now additionally or exclusively using mobile devices – 51 percent in Q2-2013 compared to 33 percent in Q2-2012.
 
The use of smartphones for gambling rose from 7 percent of mobile users last year to 15 percent this year.
 
The number of punters using tablet devices continued to grow, with 23 percent of respondents confirming they used tablets to have a flutter as an additional way to access the internet, and 5 percent saying they used only their tablets to place bets in Q2-2013.
 
Respondents who said they used desktop, smartphones and tablets as multiple channels for their wagering activities doubled from 5 percent to 10 percent.
 
From the industry perspective, William Hill plc is probably the most successful gambling company in leveraging the mobile vertical, reporting that its mobile user demographic profile has closed the gap on desktop and is 87 percent male, with most aged between 18 and 34 years.
